Psychiatry Residency Program Overview

The UCR School of Medicine's four-year graduate medical education program in psychiatry offers diverse and eclectic training opportunities in the full breadth of psychiatry, including psychotherapy and pharmacology. Our program features diverse training sites, dedicated faculty mentors, and a commitment to expanding and diversifying the psychiatric workforce in Inland Southern California.

Application Information

The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and accepts applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Our NRMP program categorical code is 1522400C0.

To complete our application process, all of the following materials must be completed and submitted through ERAS:

  • Medical/osteopathic school transcript.
  • MSPE (dean’s letter) from medical/osteopathic school.
  • Personal statement.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • USMLE transcript: A passing score on USMLE Step I and Step II is required for all trainees prior to beginning a UCR GME program. To meet this requirement, applicants should have passed USMLE Step II prior to placement on UCR rank order lists.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
    • At least one letter needs to be from a faculty psychiatrist who can comment directly on your clinical performance in psychiatry (a departmental letter from your home psychiatry department is not expected; letters from individual faculty members are preferred.)
    • Of the remaining letters, at least one needs to be from a non-psychiatrist commenting directly on your clinical work in a different specialty such as pediatrics, OB/GYN, medicine, etc.

Applicants who meet the criteria above and who have submitted the required materials will be sent an email with a link to a survey that will request a brief answer (no more than 150 words) to the following question:

“Why is the UC Riverside Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program specifically appealing to you?”

We will begin reviewing ERAS applications on September 25, 2024. Virtual interviews will be held on selected Wednesdays between October 2024 and January 2025.
