UCR SOM Psychiatry Residency Program Overview

Breadcrumb

The UC Riverside School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program is a community-based, university-affiliated training program committed to improving mental health care in Inland Southern California, a region encompassing Riverside and San Bernardino Counties with significant healthcare disparities. Our mission is to develop a diverse, skilled, and socially responsive psychiatric workforce that reflects and serves the communities of this medically underserved area, with a strong focus on equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Established in 2014, the program offers comprehensive clinical training across a variety of settings, including county, state, federal, private, and academic health systems. Training sites include Riverside University Health System, Patton State Hospital, Pacific Grove Hospital, VA facilities in Long Beach and Loma Linda, Kaiser Permanente Riverside, and UCR Health clinics. Residents gain broad, hands-on experience treating diverse patient populations, with particular attention to underserved and structurally marginalized communities.

Diversity and inclusion are foundational to the program’s culture. Residents contribute to health equity through involvement in initiatives such as the Diversity Advisory Committee, the Riverside Free Clinic, and the UCR Psychiatry Asylum Clinic. Faculty members bring a wide range of clinical and scholarly expertise and are dedicated to mentorship and creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment.

Graduates are well-prepared for careers in community psychiatry, private practice, and academic medicine, equipped to lead with clinical excellence and a deep commitment to social impact.
